Zomato has cancelled its grocery delivery plans for the second time in two years, the company declared in an email. Zomato had begun its 45-minute grocery delivery service in a few markets, beginning from Delhi NCR, in July. It allowed its users to order directly from stores. According to the email, Zomato had moderate success and faced a few challenges, including frequent changes in the inventory and gaps in order fulfilment, which led to a poor consumer experience.
The company confirmed the progress in a statement. “We have chosen to shut down our grocery pilot and, as of now, have no plans to run any other form of grocery delivery on our platform.”
Zomato entered the grocery delivery market again this year due to increasing competition with rival companies like JioMart, BigBasket and Swiggy’s Instamart. The grocery delivery market and express deliveries have seen a rapid increase with BigBasket preparing to launch express deliveries, Swiggy taking Instamart to 11 cities, Grofers, and Dunzo also planning to perfect the express delivery model.
