Zomato is expanding its going-out business by introducing a secondary market for event ticketing on its platform. The new ‘Book Now, Sell Anytime’ feature lets users resell event tickets purchased through Zomato on the app.
The company will launch the ‘Book Now, Sell Anytime’ feature on 30th September, starting with bookings for Zomato’s Feeding India concert headlined by Dua Lipa.
Through Zomato, users will be able to resell their tickets at double the original phase price. The moment a ticket is sold (which cancels out the original), a new one will be issued to the buyer.
The seller will receive the full value of the issued price, excluding applicable taxes, via their preferred payment method.
Zomato has implemented measures to prevent unfair practices like market touting. These include capping the number of tickets a customer can buy and resell to 10 per category.
The maximum resale price is limited to 2x the current phase price on the Zomato app. If the event tickets are sold out, the cap is 2x the final phase price.
For example, if a customer bought an Early Bird ticket for Rs 1,000 and the current phase price is Rs 2,000, they can list their ticket for up to Rs 4,000.
On 21st August, Zomato announced the acquisition of Paytm’s events and movie ticketing business in an all-cash deal valued at Rs 2,048 crore, marking a significant expansion beyond food delivery.
The acquisition positions Zomato to compete directly with Reliance-backed BookMyShow, the market leader in online ticketing.
The company is planning to launch a separate app called ‘District’ for its going-out business, which will include dining out, live events, and movie and event ticketing.
