YouTube is testing a new “Play Something” button on its mobile app, aimed at making content discovery easier and reducing endless scrolling.
The button plays videos directly in the Shorts player interface, including both Shorts and regular videos in a portrait layout with large controls for liking, commenting, and sharing.
It disappears when the app’s mini-player is active, indicating it’s designed for smooth content initiation from the main interface.
First spotted in version 19.50 for Android, the feature has been under development since at least 2023 and resembles Netflix’s “Play Something” feature.
Though still in testing, the button aims to enhance the browsing experience by offering randomised content based on user preferences.
