Volcano Explodes in Spain’s Canary Islands

A volcano erupted on Spain’s Canary Island of La Palma on Sunday, throwing lava in the air and flowing in rivers towards villages from the Cumbre Vieja national park. Authorities had started rescuing the ill and farm animals from nearby villages before the eruption began at 14:15 GMT, according to the island’s government. Some video footage showed fountains of lava exploding hundreds of metres into the sky and at least three rivers of melted rock flowing down the hill, cutting down the woods and farmland and spreading as it reached the lower ground.

Canary Islands President Angel Victor Torres said in a press conference that around 5,000 people had been rescued, and no injuries had been reported so far. “It is not seen that anyone else will have to be evacuated. The lava is flowing towards the coast, and the damage will be material. According to experts, there are around 17-20 million cubic meters of lava,” he said. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez arrived in La Palma to talk with the island’s government on managing the eruption.
