UK Prime Minister Alexander Boris de Pfeffel Johnson has accepted the invitation of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to be the Chief Guest at Republic Day celebrations on 26 January, 2021 in New Delhi, UK Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab informed on Tuesday.
“UK PM Johnson has also accepted the very generous invitation to attend India’s Republic Day celebrations in January, which is a great honour,” said Raab. He added that PM Boris Johnson has invited PM Modi to the UK-hosted G7 summit next year.
“I am absolutely delighted to be visiting India next year at the start of an exciting year for Global Britain, and look forward to delivering the quantum leap in our bilateral relationship that Prime Minister (Narendra) Modi and I have pledged to achieve,” PM Johnson said in a statement.
With this visit, PM Johnson becomes the second UK Prime Minister to attend the event after John Major in 1993. India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said Johnson accepting the invitation for the Republic Day celebration, marks a new era in Indo-UK ties.
Raab’s three-day India visit from December 14-17 comes at a time when the UK is holding complex negotiations with the European Union to reach a post Brexit trade deal.
