Twitter begins improving the process for users to report harmful tweets to make it easier for users to explain what is wrong with the content they are viewing, the company said. The move will start with a small test of Twitter Web users in the United States.
Instead of asking users to report how a tweet violates Twitter’s rules, they will be asked if they have been attacked with hate, harassment or threatened with violence or shown content related to self-harm. Users will also be permitted to describe why they are flagging the content in their own words, Twitter said.

“In moments of necessity, people want to be listened to and get support,” Brian Waismeyer, data scientist of Twitter’s health user team, said. Twitter said that the process will let them gather more information on tweets that do not violate its rules but that users still find them problematic or upsetting, which will help the company update its policies in the future. It is one of the recent changes that Twitter has made to improve its user safety. Last month, the company had said that it would start banning the sharing of personal media like photos and videos without the person’s consent.
