The Telangana government has approved Rs 205 crore for acquiring over 280 acres of land to develop Mamnoor Airport in Warangal, following a “No Objection” certificate from GMR Group, the operator of Hyderabad Airport, for the aerodrome’s operation.
As per a government order issued on Sunday, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) informed the state government in July 2022 of its readiness to develop Warangal Airport for A-320 aircraft operations under Instrument Flight Rules (IFR).
The AAI has committed to covering the infrastructure, operational, and maintenance costs for the proposed airport. A master plan has been prepared, requiring an additional 253 acres of encumbrance-free land from the Telangana state government at no cost.
The AAI requested the state government to expedite the transfer of the required land and secure a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from Hyderabad International Airport Ltd.
As per the concession agreement between the GMR Group, which operates Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, and the Ministry of Civil Aviation, no new or existing airport can be developed, upgraded, or improved into a domestic or international airport within a 150 km aerial distance of Hyderabad Airport until the 25th anniversary of its opening. However, Mamnoor Airport, located approximately 175 km from Hyderabad Airport by road, falls outside this restriction.
The government has authorised the Warangal District Collector to acquire 280.30 acres of land for Mamnoor Airport’s development and approved Rs 250 crore for the land acquisition. The Collector has been instructed to expedite the process.
Additionally, the government has ordered the acquisition of another 253 acres of land to be handed over to the AAI for extending the runway.
