Tata Steel is working on a plan to transition to low-carbon technologies in the UK and the Netherlands. In October 2021, Tata Steel spun off Tata Steel UK and Tata Steel Netherlands from Tata Steel Europe into two separate companies.
CEO and MD TV Narendran and Executive Director and CFO Koushik Chatterjee said: that Tata Steel UK and Tata Steel Netherlands have been developing detailed plans for the transition to low CO2 technologies in line with the company’s goal of producing CO2-neutral steel in Europe by 2050.
“At Tata Steel in the Netherlands, we plan to phase out our blast furnaces and coal over the next ten years, replacing them with a combination of hydrogen-based direct iron (DRI) technology and electric furnaces,” executives said in the annual report for 2021-22.
In the Netherlands, the company has a capacity of 7 MTPA. According to the company, Tata Steel UK also produces steel through the blast furnace and basic oxygen furnace routes with a capacity of 5 million tonnes per annum (MTPA). During 2022-23, Tata Steel will commission a pelletising plant that is 70% complete and commission a cold rolling mill in stages, starting with the pickling line and the cold rolling mill.
