Tata Power and Tata Motors have teamed up to develop a 7 MWp solar roof project at the latter’s passenger car factory in Chikhali, Pune. This is the third phase of a 17 MWp on-site solar project jointly developed by the two companies, of which 10 MWp has already been installed.
The two companies recently signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) for the solar project. The rooftop installation is expected to generate 23 million units of electricity and reduce 523,000 tons of carbon dioxide. This is equivalent to planting 836,000 trees in a lifetime.
Rajesh Khatri, vice president of operations at Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Ltd, said that Tata Power would move closer to its goal of 100% renewable energy with the new unit. “When this capacity comes on stream, we will be the largest on-site solar installation in India,” he added.
As a signatory to RE100, Tata Motors is committed to using 100 per cent renewable energy in its operations by gradually increasing the proportion of renewable energy used in its operations. Tata Power has implemented several large-scale solar rooftop solutions, including one of the largest rooftops in the world (16MW) at a single location at Radhasoami Satsang Beas (RSSB) in Amritsar.
