Tata Power Inks MoU with Rajasthan Government

The Memorandum of Understanding also seeks to make it easier to finance capital projects.

Tata Power Company Ltd, on Monday 30 September announced that they have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Rajasthan Government for a 1-year plan totaling to Rs around Rs 1.2 lakh crore in power distribution, transmission, and renewables. 

The company, in a press release, said, “This ambitious 10-year plan aims to support Rajasthan’s transformation into a power surplus state, providing 24/7 clean, affordable, and reliable power supply with investments in renewable energy projects and manufacturing, transmission, distribution, nuclear power, rooftop installations, and EV charging.”

The company added that this MoU will place Rajasthan at the heart of the nation’s clean energy transition, contributing significantly to the country’s energy goals.

Tata Power’s agreement involves a substantial investment across the entire power value chain, covering generation, transmission, and distribution (T&D) reforms. It includes renewable energy projects such as solar, wind, hybrid, and battery energy storage systems (BESS). The initiative also focuses on rooftop solar installations and expanding EV charging infrastructure across the state. This comprehensive approach aims to modernize the power grid and enhance renewable energy capabilities in Rajasthan.

The highlights of this MoU are as follows: 

  • The company will invest Rs 1.2 lakh crore in total, of which around Rs 75,000 crore will be dedicated to renewable energy projects. 
  • The development of 10,000 megawatts (MW) of renewable energy capacity, which includes 6,000 MW of Solar and 4,000 MW of hybrid across Jaisalmer, Barmer, Bikaner, and Jodhpur.
  • The development of an advanced 2,000 MW solar module manufacturing facility in Jodhpur will require a total investment of Rs 2,000 crore. 
  • Tata Power plans to invest heavily in Rajasthan’s transmission and distribution infrastructure, with Rs 20,000 crore dedicated to improving distribution systems and Rs 10,000 crore allocated for transmission upgrades. These investments are aimed at modernizing the state’s power grid, reducing energy losses, and enhancing power quality. Additionally, Tata Power is exploring the potential for developing nuclear power projects as part of its broader efforts to support sustainable energy solutions.
  • Additionally, plans for 1 lakh EV charging stations across Rajasthan for a total investment of Rs 1,000 crore. 
  • Installation of rooftop solar power for 10 lakh households to support PM Surya Ghar Yojana

The company, in its statement, said, “The MoU will have a transformative socio-economic impact, creating over 28,000 direct jobs in the state. Tata Power will strengthen the growth of local industries in areas such as solar manufacturing, infrastructure development, and renewable energy innovations.In addition, the large-scale integration of renewables will lower energy costs for industries and consumers, making Rajasthan an attractive destination for green investments and sustainable industrial development.”

The company has already established a strong footprint in Rajasthan and has already commissioned 1 gigawatt of solar project and 185 MW of wind projects in the state, and they have also installed 130 MW of rooftop solar.
