After suspending Genie’s operations in cities including Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Mumbai for a week, food tech giant Swiggy has resumed operations this week, but with services from 7 am to 8 pm.
The app also said that “due to current demand, long-distance delivery services may not be available.” This comes when food technology and fast-moving business players have been dealing with employee turnover and a lack of delivery supervisors, which is a massive challenge for these players. These players also saw a surge in demand during IPL games and festivals, leading to more supply and demand issues.
Last week, on May 7, Swiggy discontinued its pickup service, Genie. The company said: “Swiggy Genie is temporarily unavailable in 3 out of 68 cities. Cricket and festival seasons have resulted in a surge in demand to meet food market and Instamart needs, requiring us to prioritise these deliveries accordingly. We Hope to restore Swiggy Genie in affected cities as soon as possible.”
Over the past month, these players have announced a series of initiatives to stem the loss of these delivery executives. Zomato‘s Deepinder Goyale said he would donate all Employee Stock Option Plan (ESOP) proceeds worth Rs 700 crore to Zomato Future Foundation and will be used to fund the education of up to two children each of all Zomato delivery partners 50,000 rupees per child. Has served in Zomato’s fleet for over five years, exceeding certain service quality standards.
On the other hand, Swiggy and Zepto allow their delivery partners to join the company for full-time positions based on their performance. Experts say Swiggy has also invested in bike-taxi startup Rapido, which will give them an edge over their competitors.
