Earlier this week, private company SpaceX achieved a major milestone by sending two civilians on a historic spacewalk. The mission, called SpaceX Polaris Dawn, saw fintech billionaire Jared Isaacman and SpaceX engineer Sarah Gillis venturing further into space than any human has in the last 50 years.
This marks a significant leap forward for the commercial space industry. The crew made their spacewalk, floating nearly 450 miles above Earth, in the first privately funded spacewalk.
The video of the spacewalk shows the two civilians stepping outside into the vastness of space, looking every bit like seasoned NASA astronauts on a spacewalk. Once their Dragon spacecraft reached an orbit of 430 miles above Earth, the crew began their extravehicular activity at 10:12 GMT on Thursday.
This achievement demonstrates how commercial efforts, such as those by SpaceX, reshape space exploration and benefit both the private sector and NASA. Space exploration is advancing, and innovative companies will continue to seize these opportunities to grow and explore.
This mission is part of Isaacman’s Polaris program, which includes a series of private spaceflights that push technological boundaries.
