Soumya Swaminathan,the director general of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), has been appointed as the deputy director general of programmes of World Health Organisation (WHO).
She will be working under Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus who took over this July. She will be holding the second highest position in the global body.
As per WHO director general, Swaminathan will be the deputy director general for programmes (DDP) while Jane Ellison will be the deputy director general for corporate operations(DDC).
