The Nifty fell by 218.60 points to close at Rs 24,180.80, while the Sensex dropped 662.87 points to end at Rs 79,402.29.

Benchmark indices experienced a sharp decline on 3rd October, dropping 2% and marking the fourth consecutive session of losses. The Nifty fell below 25,250 due to escalating geopolitical tensions between Israel and Iran.

At market close, the Sensex fell by 1,769.19 points to 82,497.10, while the Nifty dropped by 546.80 points to 25,250.10.

The Indian VIX index rose significantly to 13.17, up 1.18 points.

The market opened with a gap-down and continued to decline throughout the day, driven by selling across multiple sectors, particularly in oil & gas, banking, auto, and real estate. Both the BSE Sensex and Nifty50 broke key support levels.

In today’s downturn, investors lost around Rs 9.6 lakh crore in wealth, with the market capitalisation of BSE-listed companies decreasing to Rs 465.25 lakh crore from Rs 474.86 lakh crore in the previous session.

BPCL, L&T, Tata Motors, Shriram Finance, and Axis Bank were the biggest losers on the Nifty, while JSW Steel and ONGC were among the gainers.

All sectoral indices closed in the red, with real estate down 4.5% and auto, banking, media, capital goods, and oil and gas indices falling 2-3%.

BSE Mid-cap and Small-cap indices each declined by 2%.

Over 200 stocks, including Balrampur Chini Mills, Britannia Industries, Coforge, and Deepak Fertilizers, reached their 52-week highs on the BSE.

Conversely, more than 60 stocks, including Spandana Sphoorty Financial, RBL Bank, Raj Television Network, and New Delhi Television, hit their 52-week lows.
