Samsung India has filed a lawsuit against members of a labour union that has been on strike for 11 days at its home appliances plant in Tamil Nadu, heightening tensions with the workforce.
The lawsuit was filed on 12th September and requests a temporary injunction from a district court in Tamil Nadu to stop the union and its members from protesting, chanting slogans, and making statements in and around the factory located near Chennai.
Lawyers convened in Kancheepuram district, near Chennai, where the case was anticipated to be heard on Thursday.
Since 9th September, numerous Samsung employees have been staging protests and disrupting work from a makeshift tent, calling for higher wages and recognition of their union. This plant generates about a third of the company’s annual $12 billion revenue in India.
The protests have affected Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “Make in India” initiative, which aims to attract foreign investors and triple electronics production to $500 billion in six years.
Their 14-page court filing, not publicly available, claims the union’s actions could disrupt factory operations and prevent willing employees from working, potentially escalating and threatening the factory’s smooth operation and employee safety.
Samsung did not comment on the filing but stated last week that it was in discussions with workers to resolve the issues as quickly as possible.
