Sam Altman calls DeepSeek – R1 impressive, promises better models

He highlighted OpenAI's focus on its research roadmap.

OpenAI’s Sam Altman praised the Chinese AI platform DeepSeek’s chatbot for its impressive performance and cost but emphasised that OpenAI would deliver “much better” models.

He highlighted OpenAI’s focus on its research roadmap, stressing the growing importance of more computing for success.

Altman expressed excitement about future AI developments, including AGI, and assured that next-gen models would amaze the world.

DeepSeek gained attention for its cost-effective AI model, competing with US-based OpenAI, and became the top free app on Apple’s iPhone store.

However, a recent cyber attack led to limitations on user registration as the company worked to address the issue.

The rise in DeepSeek’s popularity has impacted global stock markets, causing losses for OpenAI’s partner, SoftBank Group.

India Seeks Deepseek, Prefers It Hosted on Its Own Servers: Ashwini Vaishnaw

Dhruva Kulkarni

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that DeepSeek, an AI-powered chatbot, will soon be hosted on Indian servers to address privacy concerns and ensure better control over data.

DeepSeek, which is open-source, will be available on India’s new common compute facility, enabling startups and developers to collaborate and contribute to its growth.

Vaishnaw emphasised that the real value of AI lies in algorithmic efficiency and quality data, with India benefiting from its robust computing facilities and data quality.

The common computing facility will allow diverse ideas to flourish, particularly through collaboration with startups to create more efficient algorithms and better datasets.

Launched in December 2023, DeepSeek has already become the top-downloaded free app in the US.

It is compared to OpenAI’s GPT-4 for its math, coding, and language tasks capabilities, but at a much lower cost. Training DeepSeek cost $6 million, a fraction of the $100 million spent by OpenAI on GPT-4, thanks to the founder’s access to Nvidia A100 chips, which have been banned for export to China.

Microsoft to Acquire TikTok; Informed by Donald Trump

Ali Waghbakriwala

US President Donald Trump told reporters on Monday that Microsoft (MSFT.O) is in talks to purchase TikTok and that he would like to see a bidding war for the app.

As previously said, Trump is anticipated to consult with other stakeholders over the acquisition of TikTok before making a decision on the app’s future within the next 30 days.

The app, which has over 170 million users in the US, was temporarily pulled offline just before a rule came into effect on January 19 requiring ByteDance to either sell the app on national security grounds or risk being banned.

Trump tried to delay the law’s implementation by 75 days with an executive order he issued after taking office on January 20. US officials warned that ByteDance posed a risk of exploiting US data; thus, this was done.

Oracle, Microsoft in Talks to Buy TikTok

Dhruva Kulkarni

Oracle, along with a group of investors including Microsoft, is in talks to acquire TikTok’s global operations, with discussions ongoing with the White House.

Oracle already supports much of TikTok’s infrastructure through its server network and would play a key role in overseeing TikTok’s operations, focusing on algorithm management, data collection, and software updates to reduce Chinese ownership.

While not fully clear on its role, Microsoft is part of the negotiations. The company had previously attempted to acquire TikTok in 2020, alongside Oracle and Walmart, but Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates referred to the bid as a “poisoned chalice.”

Walmart is not participating in the current talks due to the high estimated price of the app, which led them to decline involvement.

This development follows a 75-day reprieve granted by US President Donald Trump, allowing TikTok to delay enforcement actions related to ByteDance’s divestment from TikTok. Earlier, Trump proposed a “joint venture” model where the US would own 50% of TikTok.

Ericsson Falls Short of Estimates as Sales in India Struggle

Dhruva Kulkarni

Ericsson AB’s earnings missed analysts’ expectations in the fourth quarter, as sales to India did not recover as anticipated.

Ericsson’s adjusted earnings for Q4 were 9.8 billion Swedish kronor ($894 million), up 33% from last year, but missed analysts’ estimate of 10.3 billion kronor. The company’s operating margin was 13.4%, below the forecast of 14.03%.

Ericsson and Nokia face a weak telecom equipment market, with many operators delaying network upgrades.

Ericsson has focused on cost-cutting and expanding in the US and India, leading to a 60% share rise over the last year.

While the Radio Access Network (RAN) market may see short-term improvement, the long-term outlook is still weak.

Ericsson’s net sales rose 1% to 72.9 billion kronor in Q4, with North America driving growth, aided by a $14 billion contract with AT&T. Sales in India have dropped, with 5G spending slowing after a big 2022 rollout.

Ericsson expects some recovery in India as Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea increase investment, though no major rebound is expected.

Europe is showing slight growth, with a new contract from Spanish carrier Masorange for building an OpenRAN-compliant network.
