SAIL and BHP Partner to Develop Low-Emission Steel-Making Strategies

SAIL announced that both companies signed a MoU to promote decarbonisation in steelmaking.

On Monday, SAIL announced it had signed an agreement with BHP, a global resources company, to collaborate on strategies for low-emission steel manufacturing technologies.

SAIL announced that both companies signed a MoU to promote decarbonisation in steelmaking, as stated in a recent announcement.

The collaboration is seen as a significant step for SAIL and BHP in advancing lower carbon steelmaking technology pathways for the blast furnace process in India.

Under the MoU, the parties are exploring several workstreams to support the potential decarbonisation of SAIL’s integrated steel plants that use blast furnaces, starting with an initial study to assess various strategies for reducing greenhouse gas emissions (GHG).

The workstreams will explore alternative reductants, such as hydrogen and biochar, in blast furnaces to enhance local research and development capabilities for supporting the decarbonisation transition.

SAIL Chairman Amarendu Prakash stated that the company looks forward to collaborating with BHP to develop sustainable steel production methods, emphasising the urgent need to align the steel sector with climate commitments.

BHP’s Chief Commercial Officer, Rag Udd, highlighted the challenge of decarbonising the steel industry and stressed the importance of collaboration to leverage shared expertise and resources in developing technologies that can significantly reduce carbon emissions now and in the future.
