Russia has stealthily spent $300 million plus since 2014 trying to impact politicians and other officials exceeding two dozen countries, the State Department alleged. State Secretary Antony Blinken, who signed the cable released on Tuesday, mentions a new intelligence valuation of Russia’s global covert efforts supporting policies and parties concerned with Moscow.
The cable does not mention specific Russian targets but says that the US provides confidential information to select individual countries. The Biden administration made efforts to declassify intelligence about Moscow’s military and political aims, assuming Russia would launch a war against Ukraine. Many of President Joe Biden’s top National Security Officials have experienced the countering of Moscow. They served in Government when Russian President Vladimir Putin launched a wide-ranging mission to influence the 2016 and 2020 US Presidential Elections.
A Senior Administration Official declined to predict how much money Russia had believed to spend in Ukraine, wherein President Volodymyr Zelensky, along with his top deputies, have accused Putin of interfering in domestic politics. The official briefing reporters on the condition of obscurity under the rules set by the Administration. They rejected comparisons between Russia’s activities and the US media financing along with the political initiatives all over the world. The official said that Putin was spending huge amounts to manipulate democracies from the core.
The State Department, on Monday, took an unusual step of releasing a diplomatic cable that was sent to the US embassies and delegations abroad, many of them in Europe, Africa, and South Asia, mentioning their concerns. The cable marking sensitive and not intended for foreign audiences was not classified. It contained a series of discussing points the US diplomats were taught to raise with their host Governments regarding the alleged Russian Interference.
