Russian forces attacked the Ukrainian city Mariupol, attacking its downtown as civilians hide in a mosque to avoid the explosions. Fighting also increased in the outskirts of the capital, Kyiv, as Russia kept bombarding other cities in the country. Mariupol has witnessed some of Ukraine’s worst hits since Russia attacked.
Attempts started to bring food, water and medicine into the city of 430,000 and evacuate its civilians. Over 1,500 people have died in Mariupol during the attack, according to the mayor’s office. The Ukrainian government said that the Sultan Suleiman Mosque was hit. Still, a man claiming to be the mosque association’s president said the building was spared when a bomb fell about 700 metres away.
