For the first time in almost two years, the rupee in opening trade on Monday plunged by 66 paise to fall below the Rs 66 level against the dollar.
In early trade, the rupee fell by 66 paise to 66.49 a dollar at the Interbank Foreign Exchange Market.
According to Forex dealers, A strong dollar demand from importers and banks, and heavy losses in domestic equity markets weighed on the local currency.
