Ratan Tata’s impact reached well beyond business. He led the Tata Group into various sectors, such as telecom and passenger cars, introducing the Indica, India’s first homegrown car, and the Nano, the world’s most affordable vehicle.
Ratan Tata launched Ginger, a budget hotel chain, and led more than 60 acquisitions, expanding the Tata Group’s reach. He also decided to take Tata Consultancy Services public, marking a significant milestone as the only major Tata company to do so.
Despite challenges, Tata remained committed to his vision for the Nano. The project faced political opposition, requiring the relocation of production to Gujarat, but he persevered in his mission.
Ratan Tata made headlines in 2011 when he controversially appointed Cyrus Mistry as his successor. After Mistry’s departure in 2016, Tata appointed N Chandrasekaran to lead Tata Sons.
Despite receiving the prestigious Padma Vibhushan award in 2008, Ratan Tata always remained humble. He consistently attributed his numerous achievements to his team, fostering a culture of appreciation and respect within the Tata Group.
He said, “Like my mentor, JRD Tata, I had never considered politics. I am not cut out to be political and will not venture into it.” This reflects his focus on business rather than political involvement.
Outside the corporate world, Tata was known for his quiet strength and preference for a low profile. His philanthropic work through Tata Trusts has significantly impacted healthcare, education, and rural development. Notable initiatives include creating cancer care facilities and establishing India’s largest tertiary care centre for small animals in Mumbai.
Even in retirement, Tata exemplified simplicity and dedication, making few public appearances. His most recent appearance was on 15th August, when he celebrated the Parsi New Year at the Tata Fire Temple in Bandra.
Ratan Tata was an angel investor in startups like Upstox, FirstCry, and Ola Electric, demonstrating his strong commitment to innovation and entrepreneurship.
Although his public presence decreased, Tata remained active in official and philanthropic efforts, participating in virtual meetings with insight and purpose. His legacy reflects a life dedicated to service and upliftment, inspiring future generations to pursue integrity and compassion.
