The Indian Railways is working on using AI-camera-based technology to address the problem of dirty linens provided to train passengers. Railway minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has introduced a machine that uses artificial intelligence (AI) to automatically sort out soiled linens with stains and damages before packing them.

Each packet includes two bedsheets, a pillow cover, a hand towel, and a blanket. Dirty linens are a frequent problem, and the railways regularly receive complaints from passengers. Approximately six lakh packets of linens are distributed daily.

Pune is using the first state-of-the-art “stain and damage” detection machine, designed for cotton bedsheets of size 1400X2500 mm. The machine uses high-resolution cameras to capture detailed images of bedsheets, ensuring high detection accuracy.

The minister mentioned that the Indian Railways has 80 mechanised laundries nationwide. Only 2% of linen is sample-checked, and those not cleaned are rejected.

The minister referred to this new machine as an experiment, with plans to use it nationwide as the technology improves. The ministry aims to implement it in the laundries on the Central Railway and Western Railway, followed by its use in all zones across the country.
