Prime Minister Launches PARAM Rudra Supercomputers

These systems will improve India's capacity for weather modelling and climate forecasting.

On Thursday, September 26, Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled three PARAM Rudra supercomputers. These supercomputers, created domestically as part of the National Supercomputing Mission, signify a significant advancement in the country’s weather and climate research capabilities.

Speaking via video conference to scientists and others, Modi highlighted that these supercomputers, which cost Rs 130 crore to build, have been positioned in Pune, Delhi, and Kolkata to support cutting-edge scientific research.

Modi also launched an Rs 850-crore high-performance computing system specifically designed for weather and climate research, characterising the day as a major achievement in science and technology.

During the launch at 5.30 pm today, Modi emphasised the importance of science and technology in shaping India’s future, and he urged the younger generation to play a role in this significant technological milestone.

Speaking at the launch PM Modi said, “There is no sector which does not rely on technology and computing capability,” adding, “In this revolution, our share should not be in bits and bytes but in terabytes and petabytes. Therefore, this achievement proves that we are moving in the right direction at the right pace.”

Param Rudra Supercomputers, developed by C-DAC Pune, boast a 1-petaflop processing capability and will revolutionise radio astronomy and meteorology research.

Arka and Arunika, the two new high-power computing systems, will significantly enhance weather predictions and climate forecasting. These systems will improve India’s capacity for weather modelling and climate forecasting.

Additionally, the systems will foster global collaboration, making India a key player in international meteorological research. The upgrade to the Giant Metre Radio Telescope (GMRT) will enhance its computational power and sensitivity to low-frequency signals from space. This will enable deeper insights into distant celestial bodies and cosmic phenomena.
