According to an official press release, the Election Commission (EC) will today announce the timetable for the election of the next President of India.
President Ram Nath Kovind’s term ends on July 25, when the next president must be elected under Article 62 of the constitution. The President of India is elected by an Electoral College of 776 MPs and 4,120 legislators. The Electoral College received 10,98,903 votes.
The NDA holds 48.9% of the votes of all MPs and MLAs. According to the media reports, the administration wants to reach a consensus with its allies and supporters to decide on the next president from a “comfort and command position”. Among them, the BJP is reaching out to Biju Janata Dal (BJD) and the YSR Congress to support its candidate.
The opposition has not yet announced a joint candidate for the presidency. Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao or KCR and Maharashtra leader Sharad Pawar are leading the meeting to build consensus.
The last presidential election was held in 2017, in which Ram Nath Kovind won 65.35% of the vote to become the 14th President of India.
