PM Modi to Inaugurate Kartavya Path Today: 10 Things You Should Know

PM Modi will inaugurate the newly-named Kartavya Path and Statue of Subhash Chandra Bose. Formerly, this stretch was called Rajpath. The Path was built during colonial rule to honour the Indian king during the British Raj, King George V, who paid a visit during the Delhi Durbar in 1911. The Path was named Kingsway; following the Independence, the name changed to Rajpath. The Path stretching from Rashtrapati Bhavan to India Gate has been redeveloped. Edwin Lutyens and Herbert Baker designed the ceremonial boulevard. The newly refurnished Kartavya path symbolizes the abolition of colonial rule; on independence day, PM Modi committed to eradicating colonial traces from their mind. This commitment has been cited as the reason.

• The shifting of name from Rajpath to Kartavya Path exhibits an example of public ownership and empowerment.

• The redevelopment occurred under PM Modi’s ambitious Central Vista redevelopment project. The project will revamp the Central Vista (stretching from Vijay Chowk to India Gate).

• To ensure there’s no theft or damage to the new features — signages, lamps, fountains — there would be heavy deployment of police and 80 security guards at least for the next few days.

• To ensure safety and avoid any kind of burglary or theft, there would be a heavy deployment of police, and 80 security guards would be deployed on the site.

• On the statue, a team of sculptors spent 26,000 hours of “intense artistic endeavour”. A 100-ft-long truck with 140 wheels was specially designed for the giant stone to travel 1,665 km from Khammam in Telangana to New Delhi, where the carving was done.

• Earlier this year, Amar Jawan Jyoti was a key feature before, but the National War Memorial later replaced it.

• A Grand statue of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose is a new centrepiece. Craved out of a monolithic granite block, the statue weighs 280 tons and stands 28 feet tall.

• In the building of the sculpture of Bose, a team of sculptors spent 2600 hours producing the finest artwork. A 100-ft long truck with 140 wheels was designed to transport a humongous stone from Khammam Telangana to Delhi.

• The same ceremonial boulevard is one of the most crucial roadways in India as it is a tribute to the martyred soldier and the annual republic day parade held at the same venue.

• The Kartvya Path has a length of approximately 2 to 3 km extending from Rashtrapati Bhawan on Raisina hills to India Gate via Vijay Chowk.
