On 31st August, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched three new Vande Bharat trains, which are expected to enhance rail connectivity between Meerut and Lucknow, Madurai and Bengaluru, and Chennai and Nagercoil. This initiative will strengthen rail connectivity and support higher growth in southern states in line with Viksit Bharat 2047.
Modi highlighted the key role of southern states in India’s development via video conference during the flag-off ceremony. He noted that increased budget allocations to Tamil Nadu and Karnataka have improved rail transport in these states.
The newly launched Vande Bharat train from Meerut to Lucknow is expected to save passengers approximately one hour compared to the fastest train service on this route. The Chennai Egmore to Nagercoil Vande Bharat train service is projected to save over two hours over the current fastest service, and the Madurai to Bengaluru Vande Bharat would save approximately 90 minutes.
Modi reaffirmed his government’s commitment to improving comfort for all Indian Railway passengers, aiming for modernization to benefit everyone. He praised the Vande Bharat trains, noting their role in transforming Indian Railways and offering new opportunities for business and employment.
He highlighted that over three crore people have travelled on Vande Bharat trains, reflecting their success, and emphasized the rapid progress in railway electrification, new trains, and route construction, with over Rs. 2.5 lakh crore allocated to railways this year to enhance services.
He announced plans for sleeper versions of Vande Bharat trains and Vande Metro trains to address urban traffic issues.
He highlighted the Amrit Bharat Station Yojana, with over 1300 railway stations being renovated to improve travel convenience and provide a modern look akin to airports.
