Apple has announced a significant update to its Siri voice assistant and iPhone operating systems. To enhance its AI capabilities, the company will integrate OpenAI’s ChatGPT.
The iPhone and Mac operating system updates will include access to ChatGPT through a partnership with OpenAI, enabling features such as text and content generation.
This will be part of a new personalized AI system called “Apple Intelligence”, designed to make it easier for users to navigate Apple devices. The updated version is expected to be available in the next fall.
During the announcement, Apple’s CEO, Tim Cook, expressed his enthusiasm for the advancements, stating that they will elevate their products.
Elon Musk, the owner of Tesla and Twitter/X, expressed concerns about data security, criticizing Apple’s collaboration with OpenAI and threatening to ban iPhones from his companies.
“Apple Intelligence” will be integrated into every app and Apple product, providing writing assistance and suggesting the best routes for appointments. It is similar to Microsoft’s AI assistant, Copilot, but without any additional cost.
Apple emphasized the security of Apple Intelligence during the announcement, highlighting that no data will be stored in the cloud.
In other news, Apple announced that its Vision Pro mixed reality headset will be available in the UK on July 12, after being launched in the US in February.
Additional new features announced include the ability to send texts via satellite, schedule messages for sending at a later time, use head gestures to control AirPods Pro, a dedicated password app accessible across devices, and hide certain apps behind Face ID or passcodes.
