Ola’s Entry in Electric 2-Wheelers to Shake Up World’s Market

All SoftBank-backed Ola’s entry into the e-scooter segment is ready to recharge the entire market and has the potential to track the adoption of battery-powered vehicles quickly.

However, this can be a double pain for internal combustion engine (ICE) -powered motorcycles, such as Bajaj Auto, Hero MotoCorp, and TVS Motor. They are planning to utilize this segment actively. Let’s do it. Loss of opportunity as they must match the aggressive pricing of Ora’s upcoming scooters and not only suffer losses on each unit of e-scooters sold but also squeeze the number of regular ICE models, the analyst said.

Ora plans to price electric scooters in the range of Rs 85,000 to Rs 1.1. Business Standard reported on Monday that the price range accounts for 70 per cent of domestic traditional ICE scooter sales.

According to a research report by Emkay Global, major listed motorcycle manufacturers can benefit from the expected adoption of EVs. “But given the competition from other OEMs (Hero Electric, Ora Electric, Okinawa, Amps, etc.), we expect some pressure on market share and margins in the medium term,” he said. India sold a total of 143,837 electric motorcycles in FY2009. This corresponds to a penetration rate of less than 1 per cent. Emkay expects EV prices to fall, improving to 5-10% in the medium term due to reduced battery costs, localisation efforts and economies of scale.
