NTPC Partners With Delhi Jal Board to Turn Waste into Energy

The state-owned NTPC has partnered with the Delhi Jal Board to convert sludge from the latter’s sewage treatment plant into energy. In Delhi NCR alone, the sewage treatment plant (STP) produces up to 800 tons of sludge per day. The disposal of sludge is a major challenge as it causes environmental pollution.

“To reduce its carbon footprint, NTPC Ltd, India’s largest integrated energy company, has partnered with the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) to utilise the sludge generated by the DJB STP,” said a statement on Thursday. The dried waste sludge is fired into the NTPC Unit 4 boiler in Dudley to generate electricity. Burning the sludge into the boiler will reduce net carbon dioxide emissions and water and land pollution.

This will pave the way for using waste and converting it into energy in an environmentally friendly way, the statement said. NTPC is taking various steps to make its energy portfolio greener and plans to have 60 GW of installed capacity by 2032 through renewable energy. The company’s total installed capacity is 68,881.68 MW.
