US President Joe Biden met with Germany’s new leader on Monday and promised that the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline from Russia-to-Germany will be blocked if Russia invades Ukraine. President of Russia Vladimir Putin responded that the US and its allies are the only ones talking about an invasion.
President Biden and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz spoke at the White House to stop the crisis before armed forces broke out. Russia has gathered thousands of troops at the Ukraine border. The White House has raised alarms about the possibilities of war. Biden has been looking to strengthen support among European allies for economy-jarring sanctions against Russia if it attacks Ukraine.
“If Russia invades, which means tanks and troops crossing the border of Ukraine again, then there will be no longer a Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline. We will bring an end to it,” Biden said. That will hurt Russia economically and also cause supply problems for Germany. The pipeline has been finished, but it has not started operating yet.
