Tiktok is a Los Angeles based app which became famous for its focus on hip-hop music. It has been sued by rival Triller in accusations of patent infringement for ‘stitching together multiples music videos with a single audio track.’
On Wednesday, Thriller registered a complaint saying that Tiktok and its Chinese-owned parent ByteDance Ltd willfully infringed the June 2017 patent by importing and selling its app for iPhones and Android-based smartphones.
The focus was ‘Green Screen Video’, a feature Tiktok introduced last December, allowing users to shoot multiple videos and synchronize them with an audio track. The complaint was registered with the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Texas, including Austin.
Injunctions are being sought against other infringements and also unmentioned damages on Tiktok’s part, including the offices in Austin. As of Thursday, no immediate response was made by Tiktok to the requests for comment.
TikTok’s existing Chinese connections has already been a cause of concern to the White House and US lawmakers in regard to the privacy and national security regulations, and whether user data might be shared with the Chinese government.
The company has previously revealed that it has never given user data to China, and would not if asked.
The popular short-video app has amassed over 2 billion downloads worldwide. The case is Triller Inc v ByteDance Ltd et al, US District Court, Western District of Texas, No. 20-00693.
