Mahindra has announced the official launch the Alturas G4 on the upcoming Saturday, i.e. 24th November 2018. The launch is anticipated as the company will officially reveal the price of the new SUV along with some other feature that is yet to be declared. The Alturas G4 will be the flagship SUV in the Mahindra’s portfolio.
Alturas G4, which is basically a second-generation SsangYong Rexton, will now be sold under Mahindra’s own branding, as it was first displayed earlier this year at the Auto Expo. Mahindra is pitching the new SUV against the segment leader and direct rival Toyota Fortuner and Ford Endeavour.
The new Rexton, unlike its predecessor, isn’t based on the Mercedes M-class architecture. According to Mahindra, the chassis is all new, and the Alturas is also powered by Ssangyong’s own 178hp, 2.2-litre common rail diesel engine. However, the 7-Gtronic torque converter-based automatic gearbox has been carried over from Mercedes based version.
The car will also house 8.0-inch touchscreen, with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity, and it also doubles as the display for the 360-degree camera while parking. Alturas which is well equipped, however, it does miss out on some features, such as the likes of Ford Endeavour’s semi-auto park assist and terrain management system (for the 4WD).
The Alturas G4 2.2-litre D22DTR engine that makes over 178 hp at 4,000 rpm and 420Nm at 1,600-2,600 rpm is BS-IV compliant. Alturas also comes with a shift-on-fly four-wheel-drive system which can be engaged just by turning the round chrome knob located behind the gear lever.
