Abhinandan Varthaman, the Indian Air Force (IAF) Wing Commander was finally released from Pakistan’s captivity, on Friday at 9:20 pm. The wing Commander who returned to the country through Attari-Wagah border check post received a heartwarming welcome where people from all over the states came to see him.
Abhinandan, who was held in captivity for around 60 hours in Pakistan, said “It’s good to be back,” after returning to the country. Air vice marshal RGK Kapoor said, “Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman has been handed over to us. He will now be taken for a detailed medical checkup because he had to eject from an aircraft. IAF is happy to have him back.”
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, through his twitter handle, said, “Welcome Home Wing Commander Abhinandan! The nation is proud of your exemplary courage. Our armed forces are an inspiration for 130 crore Indians. Vande Mataram!” Earlier, Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan while addressing the Wing Commander’s release invited Indian PM to resume talks.
Pakistan had also called the release of Indian Air Force pilot as a “peace gesture” and is calling for a de-escalation of tension between the two neighbouring countries.
