Volkswagen Group, a German auto major said, it will move the Supreme Court against the National Green Tribunal (NGT), which was fined Rs 500 crores for environmental damages by use of a “cheat device” in its diesel cars.
A spokesperson for the company, on Thursday, said, “The Volkswagen Group in India reiterates that all cars from the group are compliant with the emission norms defined in India. The group awaits the copy of the order of the NGT. Volkswagen Group will challenge the order of the NGT before the Supreme Court.”
The panel in its report said, “An estimated cost of health damage because of additional NOx emissions from Volkswagen vehicles is around Rs 171.34 crores, using a metro city i.e. Delhi as the base.”
The Panel added, “The value may be considered conservative due to lack of methodologies for calculating the overall impact of nitrogen oxide on the environment in India and hence only health damages are valued.”
