The CBI today asked for 5-day custody for former Finance Minister P Chidambaram, who was questioned for three hours after he spent the night at the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) headquarters following his dramatic arrest late on Wednesday from his house in south Delhi by officials who even climbed a boundary wall in their attempts to get to him.
Chidambaram is facing investigations by the ED and CBI in the INX Media case. He is accused of misusing his position as India’s finance minister to benefit INX Media.
Chidambaram’s wife Nalini Chidambaram and son Karti Chidambaram arrived along with their lawyers when CBI took him to court. Chidambaram spent the night in ‘Lock-up suite 3’ of the CBI building.
The CBI headquarter was inaugurated by Chidambaram in 2011
Hours after the arrest of Chidambaram, a video that was in wide circulation showed him at the opening of the very building where he was kept in custody last night – the CBI headquarters in central Delhi. On June 30, 2011, Chidambaram, the Home Minister at the time, was a special guest as then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh inaugurated the new complex.
