The Adani group, after GMR group and GVK group, is set to become the largest private operator in passenger volume as it has just won the mandate to run all the six government-owned airports that were put up for privatisation.
The Adani group secured a 50-year contract for operation, management and development of the Ahmedabad, Guwahati, Jaipur, Lucknow, Mangalore and Thiruvananthapuram airports after quoting revenue share in the range of Rs 115 to Rs 177 per passenger.
According to a report, around 30 million passengers — consisting of 23.6 million domestic and 6.4 million international — travelled through the six airports altogether, in the last fiscal year. In comparison, New Delhi airport which is run by GMR group handled 65.69 million passengers whereas Mumbai airport ran by GVK group handled 48.5 million in fiscal 2018.
According to the Airports Authority of India (AAI), the Adani group offered Rs. 177 for Ahmedabad, Rs. 174 for Jaipur, Rs. 171 for Lucknow, Rs. 168 for Thiruvananthapuram, Rs. 115 for Mangaluru and Rs. 160 for Guwahati airports. All six airports are currently operated by AAI.
The government, in November 2018, had cleared the privatisation of these six AAI-run airports on the public-private partnership model.
