The Queensland government has provided Adani’s Carmichael mine project in the Galilee Basin an 11th hour exemption to new water laws which could have seen the project subject to further legal challenges.
Laws requiring Queensland mining projects to obtain a water licence have been introduced by the government in an effort of reducing the impact on ground water.
The Annastacia Palaszczuk government, however, added an amendment on Wednesday to the laws which will allow the Adani mine project, which has already faced significant legal action, to avoid court challenges to its water licence.
