Ikea that proposes to open outlets in the India, is sourcing over 35% of its cotton requirement from Indian farmers.
Every year, the company uses around 140 lakh tonnes of cotton, or 1% of the global production.
The company had sourced 50,000 tonnes of cotton from India in 2014-15.
Pramod Singh, cotton leader, Ikea said that the company aims to increase its engagement in the fields and ensure that more players from the textile industry participate.
According to him Ikea is working with over 50,000 farmers across Punjab, Gujarat, Maharashtra and Telangana and is expected to increase procurement over the next few years.
