New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern will meet US President Joe Biden at the White House on Tuesday, where she said she hopes to discuss continued US involvement in the Indo-Pacific.
“Apart from the situation in Ukraine, our biggest concern is the situation in our region,” she told New Zealand media at a news conference in Washington, DC. “We will encourage the US to continue and strengthen our engagement in our region, including the economic engagement that is so important to our region.”
The meeting has added importance in recent weeks after New Zealand raised concerns about China’s presence in the region following news of Beijing’s signing of a security deal with the Solomon Islands. China has made a concerted effort to increase its influence, and the country’s foreign minister is currently in Tonga as part of a regional tour.
In addition to meeting with Biden, Ardern said she hopes to meet with Vice President Kamala Harris, Secretary of State Anthony Blinken and US Indo-Pacific coordinator Kurt Campbell.
