On Tuesday, millions in Southern California faced new wildfire warnings and power shut-offs as strong winds fueled ongoing blazes near Los Angeles.
Santa Ana winds in Southern California have fueled wildfires, with gusts strong enough to spread embers and cause new outbreaks. Nearly 90,000 households lost power as utilities shut off electricity to prevent sparks.
Wildfire warnings cover a 482-kilometre stretch from San Diego to north of Los Angeles, with inland areas facing the highest risk. Authorities arrested 50 people for crimes, including arson and looting, during the crisis.
The biggest concern is the intense winds, which could reach hurricane force, threatening fire control efforts. Firefighters from other states, Canada, and Mexico joined efforts to contain the fires.
A rare warning has been issued due to the combination of strong winds and dry conditions, creating a “particularly dangerous situation.”
Los Angeles officials remain confident in handling the threat despite concerns about fire-fighting aircraft being grounded by high winds.
The four largest fires have scorched over 163 square kilometres, with ongoing containment efforts. The death toll is expected to rise, and around 90,000 residents remain under evacuation orders.
