Netflix, which started as a company that shipped DVDs by mail, is winding down its DVD business. The company announced Tuesday that it would ship its final disc from DVD.com on September 29.
“After an incredible 25 years in operation, we’ve decided to shut down DVD.com later this year,” Netflix said in a blog post. “Our aim has always been to provide the best possible service to our members, but this will become increasingly difficult as the business continues to shrink.”
The company acquired the DVD.com domain in March 2012, just a few months after reversing an ill-conceived plan to spin off its DVD by mail business into a standalone service called Qwikster. entity. Netflix said the first DVD it shipped was a copy of Beetlejuice, released on March 10, 1998, and it has shipped more than 5.2 billion DVDs in total.
Netflix made the announcement shortly before its first-quarter 2023 earnings release.
