Maharashtra Forms Panel to Explore Phasing Out Petrol and Diesel Vehicles in Mumbai

The state’s vehicle count is projected to reach six crore by 2030.

The Maharashtra government has formed a seven-member committee to explore banning petrol and diesel vehicles in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) due to worsening air quality and increasing pollution.

Led by retired IAS officer Sudhir Kumar Shrivastava, the committee will submit a report within three months on the feasibility of allowing only CNG and electric vehicles.

The Bombay High Court raised concerns about traffic congestion and pollution, urging a study on phasing out petrol and diesel vehicles. The committee will gather expert feedback to assess the impact on air quality.

The MMR includes Thane, Raigad, and Palghar districts. Mumbai has around 48 lakh registered vehicles, with over 2 lakh new vehicles added annually.

The state’s vehicle count is projected to reach six crore by 2030 and 15 crore by 2035, with a growth rate of 6-8%.
