On Tuesday, Israel and Lebanon reached a historic agreement to resolve a long-running maritime border dispute. It is to be noted that this agreement comes after months of negotiations mediated by the United States.
On this occasion, Israel’s Prime Minister Yair Lapid said that this historic achievement would strengthen the country’s security, infuse billions into its economy, and ensure the stability of the northern border. He further said that the unprecedented deal would strengthen Israel’s security and deliver more affordable energy to countries worldwide.
Lebanese President Michel Aoun said that the terms of the latest draft satisfied Lebanon. He added that the country hoped the deal would be announced soon. Notably, Israel and Lebanon have been at war for decades since 1948. Both countries shared a dispute over a swathe of territory in the Mediterranean Sea, which contains part of the Karish gas field and Qana, a prospective gas field. Negotiations pertaining to the Israeli-Lebanese border dispute over gas-rich waters of the countries’ Mediterranean coasts have been ongoing since October 2020.
