Kerala is set to launch India’s first initiative, ‘nPROUD’ (New Programme for Removal of Unused Drugs), on 22nd February in Kozhikode to collect and safely dispose of expired and unused medicines.
The project will begin in Kozhikode Corporation and Ulliyeri Panchayat, with plans for a statewide rollout.
Improper disposal of medicines in soil and water bodies leads to health issues, antimicrobial resistance, and environmental pollution.
Initiated by the Drugs Control Department, nPROUD ensures scientific disposal under the Biomedical Waste Management Act and Rules.
Medicines will be collected from homes during specific months, while the public can also deposit them in blue boxes at designated collection points.
The collected medicines will be processed at the KEIL waste treatment plant, approved by the Central and State Environment Departments.
