Supreme Court Justice DY Chandrachud was sworn in as India’s 50th Chief Justice on Wednesday. President Draupadi Murmu administered the oath of office to Justice Chandrachud as the Chief Justice of India at Rashtrapati Bhavan. His term will run until November 10, 2024. Supreme Court justice retires at 65.
Justice Chandrachud is the second most senior justice of the Supreme Court. His father, Justice YV Chandrachud, was the 16th Chief Justice of India, serving from February 2 1978 to July 11 1985.
Justice Chandrachud, born on November 11, 1959, was appointed to the Supreme Court on May 13 2016. He was the Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court from October 31, 2013, until his appointment to the Supreme Court.
Justice Chandrachud has been a Judge of the Bombay High Court since March 29 March 2000, until his appointment as Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court.
He also served as Additional Solicitor General of India from 1998 until he was appointed a Judge of the Bombay High Court. In June 1998, he was appointed Senior Advocate by the Bombay High Court.
Justice Chandrachud succeeds Justice UU Lalit. Justice Lalit, on October 11, recommended Justice DY Chandrachud as his centre successor under the convention. On October 17, President Mulmo appointed him as the next CJI.
The Union Law Ministry recently launched the process of appointing the next CJI, asking outgoing CJIs to recommend their successors.
According to the Memorandum of Procedure (MoP) on the appointment of judges to the upper judiciary, the outgoing chief justice starts the succession process after being notified by the Law Ministry.
The MoP noted that the Supreme Court’s most senior justices are deemed suitable for the role of CJI and must be consulted in due course with the outgoing head of the judiciary. However, the MoP does not specify a time limit for initiating the process of recommending a successor CJI name.
