On Friday, Britain’s Prime Minister Liz Truss’s office said that Jeremy Hunt, the former foreign minister of Britain, has been appointed Britain’s finance minister. This is followed by Kwasi Kwarteng’s resignation from the post after less than six weeks on the job.
It is to be noted that Hunt has twice been unsuccessful in running for the governing Conservative Party’s leadership. He once lost to Boris Johnson and then knocked out in the first round of voting in a contest which witnessed Truss take the prize.
Considered as on the centre-right of the party, Jeremy Hunt endorsed Truss’s leadership competitor, former finance minister Rishi Sunak to become the prime minister, and is considered by many in the party as a safe pair of hands.
Hunt has also previously served as health minister and culture minister. He becomes Britain’s fourth finance minister in as many months.
Truss’s office also stated Edward Argar had replaced Chris Philp as Chief Secretary to the Treasury, the second most important position in the department.
