On Monday morning, 17-year-old Indian chess master Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa defeated world champion Magnus Carlsen, in the last round of the FTX Crypto Cup in Miami. With this, he beat the world chess champion thrice in a year.
R. Praggnanandhaa was 16 when he beat Magnus Carlsen for the first time in the eighth round of the Airthings Masters. Airthings Masters is an online rapid chess tournament. The second time he defeated Carlsen in the Chessable Masters online rapid chess tournament was in May this year.
FTX Crypto Cup is an international chess championship. The game led to a draw, but after Praggnanandhaa’s 40th move, Carlsen misplayed his knight.
Although he outmanoeuvred Carlsen with 4-2 in the final round of the FTX Crypto Cup, he could only take second place in the final standings as the latter had a higher score based on previous games.
Born in Chennai, he became the youngest to earn the international master’s title at the age of 10. Praggnanandhaa won the World Youth Chess Championship Under-8 title in 2013, earning him the title of FIDE Master at the age of 7.
