The agriculture ministry announced that the final projection for 2023-24 indicates a rise of 2.61 million tonnes from the previous year’s 329.6 million tonnes. A record amount of 137.82 million tonnes of rice was produced, an increase from 135.75 million tonnes in 2022 to 23.

In the 2023-24 crop year, which concluded in June, India’s foodgrain production reached an all-time high of 332.22 million tonnes. The agriculture ministry reported on Wednesday that this was primarily due to abundant wheat and rice harvests.

According to the ministry’s statement, the last estimate for 2023-24 shows a growth of 2.61 million tonnes from the preceding year’s 329.6 million tonnes. Rice production achieved a record 137.82 million tonnes, up from 135.75 million tonnes in 2022-23.

Wheat production also reached a peak of 113.29 million tonnes, compared to 110.55 million tonnes the previous year. Nevertheless, pulse production decreased to 24.24 million tonnes from 26.05 million tonnes, and oilseeds output dropped to 39.66 million tonnes from 41.35 million tonnes.

The ministry attributed the decline in pulses, coarse cereals, soybeans, and cotton production to “drought-like conditions in southern states, including Maharashtra and prolonged dry spell during August, especially in Rajasthan.”

Sugarcane production reduced to 453.15 million tonnes from 490.53 million tonnes, and cotton output declined to 32.52 million bales (1 bale equals 170 kg) from 33.66 million bales.

The foodgrains basket includes rice, wheat, coarse cereals, millets, and pulses. The ministry also mentioned that these assessments are based on information states and union territories provide.
