Indian space scientists Mr Prahlad Chandra Agrawal and Mr Anil Bhardwaj received prestigious awards from COSPAR on Monday evening. COSPAR is the world’s first scientific body dedicated to space science research and acknowledges its contributions with these honours.

Prahlad Chandra Agrawal is a senior Indian space scientist and retired professor originating from the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research who attained the Harrie Massey Award at the 45th COSPAR scientific assembly in Busan, South Korea. This award honours outstanding contributions to space research, particularly emphasizing leadership roles. This acknowledgement highlights Agrawal’s significant impact on advancing space science.

Anil Bhardwaj, the director of Ahmedabad’s Physical Research Laboratory, earned the Vikram Sarabhai Medal for outstanding space science research in developing countries. The medal, jointly instituted by COSPAR and ISRO, recognizes Bhardwaj’s significant contributions to space science.

Agrawal received an award that included a medal, a citation, and the naming of a minor planet in his honour; he was also renowned for his contributions to X-ray astronomy.

In 2015, he led India’s AstroSat program. It is also India’s first multiwavelength astronomy satellite, which continues to operate and has contributed to more than 300 research papers. Agrawal was also a part of the renowned Chandrayaan-1 mission, extending the significant impact he has had in space science.

Since 2017, Anil Bhardwaj has been serving as the Director of PRL, besides playing a major part in ISRO’s latest scientific missions like Chandrayaan, Mangalyaan, and Aditya – L1 missions.
