Indian Railways to Spend Rs 1600 Crore on Revamping Mumbai’s CSMT

The Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) will undergo redevelopment with over Rs 1600 being spent by Indian Railways, which will also focus on retaining its prestigious heritage design.

Latest ANI report says that the redevelopment will widen the overall platform space encompassing the suburban network, followed by constructing the new terminal for long-distance trains, and the latest entry point.

S K Lohia, Managing Director – Indian Railways Station Development Corporation (IRSDC), told the news agency.” The redevelopment plan of the station will cost approximately Rs 1,642 crore. As per our plan, we will restore the 1930s look without touching the yard, and the commercial development also will be done taking the heritage aspect into consideration.”

During the time of construction of CSMT, the station was initially known as Victoria Terminus upon its finalization in 1887. CSMT is the headquarters of India’s Central Railway and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Lohia further talked about the plan is to finish the redevelopment in two phases in four years.

“The heritage structure is the biggest attraction for the public; we will remove all those structures which were built after 1930 and make it like a tourist spot. For passengers, it will give a congestion-free entry, world-class amenities, a concourse-like waiting area, green building with a divyang friendly construction,” Lohia said.
